Wanderlust presents a selective guide
to the week's travel-related news.

The stabbing of a bus driver -- by a teenager, angry over not being let off between stops -- prompted a massive transport protest by fellow workers in Paris on Tuesday, leaving commuters stranded across the city. Workers for both the bus and rail system say violent attacks against those in the transport industry are on the rise.

The magma level is rising and the tremors are increasing -- the Guagua Pichincha volcano, just west of Quito, Ecuador, is about to blow. On Monday, the U.S. State Department cautioned against travel to the region, warning that the volcano might erupt between Oct. 15 and Dec. 15.

Call it a resurrection. After closing its operations two weeks ago -- stranding travelers and sending threatening ripples throughout the travel industry in Asia and elsewhere -- Philippine Airlines has managed to start up operations again. The national flag carrier shut down on Sept. 24, after being crippled by the Asian currency crisis and a strike by 600 of its pilots.

A 200-mile journey from Guadeloupe to Anguilla in the Caribbean might not seem very far as the cruise ship plies, but it's pretty impressive when it's been traversed by 15 iguanas on a tangle of trees. In fact, it's enough to give them a place in biological history, according to the New York Times. In a study published in the journal Nature, their trip provides the first evidence for the distribution of species and how that may have affected evolution.

What will they link to next? Now airlines are in the business of trying to get consumers to invest in mutual funds. Northwest Airlines has partnered with Warburg Pincus Asset Management Inc. to offer frequent flier miles for travelers who put money into the funds. They call the program, aptly, WorldPerks InvestorMiles.
