APBNews.com misses payroll, suspends publishing

NEW YORK -- Two senior editors and a writer for APBNews.com quit on Tuesday after the company failed once again to make a payroll payment. The crime news Web site will suspend publishing for a week while it reorganizes its editorial staff.

APBNews.com spokesman Joe Krakoviak said the company was still seeking funding and expected to continue operations to the fullest extent possible. Given the company's scattered condition, however, he was unsure how many people still worked there.

"Between a dozen and two dozen," Krakoviak said. "I really don't know."

Hoag Levins, who stepped down as executive editor Tuesday, said in an interview that he had tired of the company's continued failure to pay its employees in a timely manner. Levins said the company last made a full and on-time payroll payment on Nov. 10.

Yovette Mumford, whose company SafetyTips.com bought APBNews.com last September, said she was not sure when the company last made a full payroll payment.

Managing Editor Ed Levine also quit Tuesday, as did staff writer Seamus McGraw.

Krakoviak said he expected the site would resume publishing new content next week, but that much depended on how the financing efforts went.
