Salon Wins "Cool Web Designer of the Year" Award

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, OCTOBER 4, 1996 | SALON, the acclaimed Webzine of books, arts and ideas, won the coveted the Cool Web Designer Of The Year award in New York City last night.

SALON's art director Mignon Khargie and associate art director Elizabeth Kairys were given the award in prize ceremonies sponsored by People (Magazine) Online, InfiNet and Apple Computer.

Salon was nominated from among 300,000 Web sites by Web editors at Infinet, the Internet company which originated the Cool Site of the Day awards. As the winner, Salon was chosen by ballots submitted by hundreds of thousands of Web readers.

Mignon Khargie, one of the founding staff members of Salon, came from the San Francisco Examiner. She has won more than 30 awards from the Society of Newspaper Design and other print media. Elizabeth Kairys, the former art director at California Lawyer, has won more than a dozen magazine design awards.

Salon is attracting a growing number of readers with its lively mix of news, reviews, interviews, essays, and a "Table Talk" conversation area which is one of the most heavily attended on the Web.

Recent attractions include a regular political column by campaign guru James Carville and an exclusive online diary from author Anne Rice, whose latest book "Servant of the Bones" is on top of the bestseller lists.

Sponsored by Adobe Systems, Borders Books & Music and Apple Computer, Salon is now featured in Netscape's new Inbox Direct program and is one of the selected sites featured in America Online's new "Members Choice" area (keyword:GO SALON). Other major content alliances will be announced shortly.

SALON's editor-in-chief is David Talbot, recently named by Newsweek as one of the "50 people who matter most on the Internet."
