TORONTO (AP) -- An Australian was sentenced to 60 days in jail after joking he had a bomb while checking in his luggage at the Toronto airport.
Sinan Safet Acar, 21, pleaded guilty to charges of mischief, interfering with lawful operation of property, and making a false declaration under the Aeronautics Act, police said.
Acar made the comment while checking in for an Air France flight to Paris Sunday at Pearson International Airport. The flight was delayed for more than two hours while security officers searched the area.
Police Const. Wendy Sims said Thursday said the sentence was more severe than usual in such cases because of the heightened state of alert at airports after last week's terrorist attacks in the United States.
The incident was one of at least four in the past week involving jokes about bombs at Canadian airports. In each case, the person making the joke was charged.
