Report: Bill Clinton joins Harlem YMCA

NEW YORK -- Bill Clinton may soon be pumping iron at the YMCA not too far from his new Harlem office.

The Daily News reported Saturday that the former president has accepted an honorary gym membership at the Harlem YMCA for himself and daughter Chelsea. He declined one for his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying she would have to respond for herself as a public officeholder, the newspaper said. The gym on 135th Street is about 10 blocks from the 8,300-square-foot office Clinton is expected to move into next month.

"The Harlem YMCA will do everything we can do to make him and his family feel welcome, YMCA spokeswoman Sharon Forbes told the newspaper.

Clinton decided to move to the office on the top floor of a 14-story building on 125th Street after facing a barrage of criticism over his first choice -- a penthouse suite in midtown Manhattan. That office would have cost taxpayers about $800,000 per year.
