BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- A man died of hypothermia after wading into an icy river to escape police who wanted to question him about a series of purse snatchings, police said.
Eddie A. Dean, 35, suffered a heart attack and died Saturday after hiding for 30 to 40 minutes in the Kalamazoo River under a bridge, police said.
Officers had stopped him to question him about three purse snatchings. Officer Jeff Coons said Dean ran away and walked knee-deep into the water. Coons said he yelled at Dean to come out, but Dean refused.
Firefighters wearing gear to protect them from the cold water brought Dean ashore, but rescue workers said Dean was stricken while in the ambulance. Hospital personnel listed hypothermia as the cause of death.
