Shag-a-delic no more
Jennifer Aniston laments shaggy-do; Woody Harrelson can jump; James Carville smells a rat; and Martha Stewart's IPO: It's a good thing.

Oct. 21, 1999 | Guess what: You're not the only one regretting that Rachel hairstyle. Jennifer Aniston herself laments the shaggy-dog 'do.

"All I have to say about that, looking back," she says in an upcoming W interview, "is, 'What the hell was I thinking?'"

Don't know, Jen, but thanks to W, we do know what you think about fashion ("I remember thinking 'couture' was a designer. I thought, wow, this guy is everywhere!"), Joan Rivers ("Now there's a woman with taste! I try to stay far away from her") and getting your photo snapped by the paparazzi ("As long as I'm not bending over with my crack showing, I don't care").

One more crack like that ...

Who can't jump?

"It's funny, because all of our players want to be movie stars, and movie stars all want to be basketball players."

-- National Basketball Association exec Greg Winik on the new NBA Entertainment League, which will showcase the dribbling talent of Woody Harrelson, David Duchovny, Mark Wahlberg and countless other Tinseltown types, in the Hollywood Reporter.

Got a hot tip? Tell Amy!

Hey, who took the "independent" out of independent counsel? (Might want to take the Fifth on that, Mr. Starr.) James Carville wants to know.

Carville's steamed that Robert Ray's climbing into the seat Ken Starr warmed up for him. His beef? Ray, who will make the final call on Whitewater, Travelgate and witness tampering in the Paula Jones case, was once given a plum federal job by Hillary foe Rudy Giuliani.

"This whole thing is just a political deal to try to help Giuliani ... This thing stinks, and I'm going to start a fumigation program," Carville carped to the New York Daily News.

"Carville's out in left field," countered Ray's people.

Let the fur fly, boys ...

Three peas in a pod

"My mother never let me forget [that I shared Elvis' birthday]. She was enthralled with the idea. Lately, I'm more of a sucker about the idea of sharing it with Stephen Hawking -- that's quite a trio, isn't it?"

-- David Bowie on sharing his birthday in Rolling Stone.

Juicy bits

Money: It's a good thing. Martha Stewart's media company apparently looked mighty pretty to investors as it made its New York Stock Exchange debut and jumped 95 percent on Tuesday. But some folks were more curious about whether Martha's design sense has influenced the look of the company's stock certificates. "It definitely has a very beautiful smiling face on it, and it definitely is not mine," Stewart told Reuters. Next on Martha Stewart Living: Make your own felt money clips.

Here's one for the you-can't-go-home-again file: More than a few drivers in Arkansas have plastered bumper stickers on their cars that say "Thanks, NY."

Looking forward to watching Calista Flockhart and Lucy Liu lock lips on "Ally McBeal" Nov. 1? Good for you. Me, I'm wondering which gal's going to make the first move for the wattle. I know, I know. We've been down this road before.

Well, that was fast. After less than two years as vice chairman and editorial director of Mort Zuckerman's New York Daily News and U.S. News and World Report, Harold Evans (aka Mr. Tina Brown) is jumping ship to write a couple of books and work on a TV show. Does this mean Herself's gonna keep her day job?

Don't ask Prince Naseem Hamed to strip for dollars -- it's against his religion. The British boxer (a Muslim) has reportedly turned down an offer of nearly half a million bucks to pose nekkid for Playgirl. But maybe the magazine should extend its offer to Ben Affleck (not a Muslim), whom an online poll has just determined to be the movie star women most want to undress. Talk about a force of nature.
