| The Senate ushered in the post-impeachment era Feb. 12, when it acquitted President Clinton of all charges. The vote capped a lackluster five-week trial, the ultimate outcome of which was never in serious doubt. When the vote came down, the perjury article was defeated 55-45 and the obstruction of justice article, 50-50. Both failed to gain even a simple majority in the Republican-controlled Senate. Last December, the House of Representatives passed the two articles of impeachment against the president based on controversial evidence compiled in the Starr Report. The impeachment articles alleged that Clinton lied under oath before a grand jury, and obstructed justice by attempting to conceal his sexual relationship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Even though the Senate has acquitted the president, the Clinton crisis refuses to go away. Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr is continuing his investigation and prosecution of players in the Whitewater and Kathleen Wiley scandals, with trials approaching for Webster Hubbell and Julie Hiatt Steele. And there is still speculation that Starr's office may indict Clinton on criminal charges. Finally, there are ongoing Justice Department investigations of malfeasance in Starr's office. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Latest Salon stories Starr shelves McDougal, Steele charges The bitter end Buchanan's brother threatens Clinton associate Buchanan's brother to surrender in "Hardball" threat Paula Jones gets psychic hot line Impeachment's legacy - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hot Table Talk discussions + Susan McDougal gets her day in court [IN POLITICS] + The Monica interview [IN POLITICS] + Independent counsel's office: mend it, don't end it!
