Blue Glow
"Survivor": Where's the Professor when you need him? Kevin Smith's cartoon "Clerks"

CBS hopes to hit pay dirt with the new reality series Survivor (8 p.m., CBS), an Americanized version of a Swedish hit in which 16 men and women are marooned on a South Seas island in a survival of the fittest. The last person standing at the end of the show's run wins $1 million. Overall, I think I'd rather take my chances with Regis. Fox cleverly counters "Survivor" with a rerun of an episode of The Simpsons (8 p.m., Fox) in which Homer lams it to a South Seas island to avoid paying a PBS pledge. Kevin Smith's 1994 indie film about New Jersey stoners becomes an animated sitcom in the new summer series Clerks (9:30 p.m., ABC). Law & Order (10 p.m., NBC) reruns the debut episode of Jesse L. Martin as Briscoe's new partner.

The documentary It's Only Rock and Roll (9 p.m., VH1) unspools the merger of movies and pop, rock and R&B in scenes from (among others) "Jailhouse Rock," "Purple Rain," "Shaft," "Trainspotting," "Grease" and, of course, "This Is Spinal Tap."
