3-D is back!

The magic of stereoscope has returned in movies like "Hannah Montana" and "U23D." Is this a return to the cheeseball glory of the '50s, or just desperation?

Mar. 14, 2008 | In this week's IFC/Beyond the Multiplex video, Matt Singer and I take a look at the recent (and somewhat dubious) re-emergence of 3-D -- the cheesiest and most venerable special effect of all -- and fondly remember some of the greatest stereoscopic examples from the '50s through the '80s. (My favorite effect: That enormous ringing telephone in Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder." Watch out for that pterodactyl! (Subscribe to these videos through iTunes and RSS).
