S P E C I A L S

The new cable movie A Bright Shining Lie (9 p.m. Sat., HBO) is an adaptation of Neil Sheehan's 1988 biography of Col. John Paul Vann (Bill Paxton), who went to Vietnam as a military advisor in 1962 and eventually grew disillusioned with America's role in the war. Co-starring Amy Madigan, Donal Logue and Eric Bogosian. James Taylor Live (9 p.m. Sat., PBS) captures the singer at New York's Beacon Theatre in the first show of his summer concert tour. Mickey Rourke plays a priest (!) who heads an inner-city school in the new cable movie Thicker Than Blood (8 p.m. EDT/9 PDT Sun., TNT), about a dedicated teacher (Dan Futterman) who tries to intervene in a student's troubled home life. John Sacret Young ("China Beach") wrote the screenplay for the new cable movie Thanks of a Grateful Nation (8 p.m. Sun., Showtime), about the plight of veterans suffering from Gulf War syndrome. With Ted Danson (playing a Senate investigator who exposes a government coverup), Steven Weber, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brian Dennehy and Marg Helgenberger.

Behind the Music (9 p.m. Sun., VH1) has a new profile of Keith Moon. The Larry Sanders Show (10 p.m. Sun., HBO) ends its run with a one-hour finale. The guest list includes Warren Beatty, Jerry Seinfeld, David Duchovny, Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, Jon Stewart and Carol Burnett.
