Passionate and penniless in Paris

Maxine Rose Schur reads her essay from "Salon.com's Wanderlust" about the lust and romance that blossom when a young couple camps out in the City of Light.

"Salon.com's Wanderlust: Real-life Tales of Adventure and Romance," the new collection of travel essays edited by Don George, is dedicated to putting the romance and passion -- the "unconquerable longing" -- back into travel writing. In this reading of her essay, "Passionate and Penniless in Paris," Maxine Rose Schur remembers a long-ago couple, fearless and fanciful, camping out under the quivering nights of a time-distant Paris.

Schur is an award-winning author of books for young people as well as a travel essayist. Her essays have appeared in numerous publications, and she has twice won the Lowell Thomas Award for excellence in travel journalism. Her latest book, "Athirst for Far-Away Things," is a memoir of her journey around the world.
