"Looking for Abdelati"
Read by Tanya Shaffer

"Salon.com's Wanderlust: Real-life Tales of Adventure and Romance," the new collection of travel essays edited by Don George, is dedicated to putting the romance and passion -- the "unconquerable longing" -- back into travel writing. In this reading of her essay, "Looking for Abdelati," Tanya Shaffer talks about wandering the streets of Casablanca in search of a friend but finding instead the surprising embrace of a family of strangers.

Shaffer is a San Francisco writer and actress who has toured more than 40 cities in the United States and Canada with her solo shows, "Miss America's Daughters" and "Let My Enemy Live Long!" and her play "Brigadista." Her work has also appeared in the anthology "A Woman's Passion for Travel." She is completing "Somebody's Heart is Burning," a collection of stories based on her time in West Africa.
