News Editor

Salon is looking for an experienced news editor to plan and manage our news and politics coverage. Candidates must have strong background and interest in national politics. Investigative reporting and Web experience are both strong pluses. This editor manages a staff of three, in New York and Washington D.C., and also works closely with editorial management in San Francisco at delivering a strong, compelling daily news product. SEO and Analytics Manager

Salon is looking for an innovative, energetic SEO and Analytics Manager to join our product team. Your job will be to work with the editorial and engineering teams to attract, measure and expand the readership of Salon and Open Salon. The ideal candidate is a creative and collaborative thinker, extremely organized and detail oriented, and able to keep up with the demands of a real-time media environment. This position is based in San Francisco.

Core responsibilities:
- Optimize and manage the implementation of business intelligence software
- Deliver weekly and monthly reports and analysis on audience behavior and trends
- Support executive, editorial, sales and product teams with data and insights as needed
- Design and develop specifications for multivariate tests, and analyze the results
- Oversee SEO practices and advise on new and better strategies
- Improve quality and volume of data gathered from readers at all points of contact

Possible additional responsibilities:
- Oversee paid membership program
- Guide thinking on opening additional membership and revenue channels 

Requirements:
- Expert knowledge of the major search engines and search engine optimization
- Proficiency in scrubbing, sanitizing, manipulating large bodies of data
- Experience with a highly-customized web analytics software implementation (Omniture, WebTrends, Unica, etc.)
- Expert-level Microsoft Excel skills (Pivot Tables, multi-axes charts, VLOOKUP, COUNTIF/SUMIF, COUNTA, MAX/MIN, etc.)
- Experience with multivariate testing schemes
- 4-5 years in online media, preferably an editorial environment
- 2-3 years in a data-intensive environment
- Passion for measuring and monetizing online news media

Product Management Internship: San Francisco

Salon.com is seeking an internship candidate with an avid interest in web development to assist the Product, Design and Engineering teams with daily operations, including specifications for site improvements and bug fixes, testing and QA. Must be extremely detail oriented with good project management skills and have at least working knowledge of HTML and the fundamentals of UI design. This position is based in San Francisco. Time commitment negotiable.

Primary responsibilities:
- Assist with writing and tracking of engineering job tickets
- Conduct routine QA and offer clear feedback to engineers
- Be of general assistance to the Product team

Editorial Internships @ Salon

Interns are an important part of Salon's daily operations. They work closely with Salon staff to research, report, write and produce our news and culture coverage. They also take part in editorial meetings and otherwise learn about the day-to-day workings of an award-winning online news and entertainment site.
