TABLE TALK, Music:
8. The Ghost of Tom Joad
Stephen Pratt (horizons) on Dec 30 95 18:35 PSTAdam Block's review of "The Ghost of Tom Joad" is off the mark....Block suggests that Springsteen's message is ingenuine or ineffective because only the chablis and brie set can afford his concert tickets. NEWS FLASH: that's exactly who has to be reached with this message. The fishermen in Galveston and the unemployed factory workers in Youngstown don't need Springsteen to tell them what their lives are like. But the people who voted for the Contract on America or didn't vote at all do need to hear from him. I'm talking about people who have the means to make a difference by giving to charity and by supporting candidates who don't view the poor as scapegoats on the backs of whom they can make a run for the presidency. Springsteen can reach some of them with his message....On the other hand, those swayed by Adam Block's sophist nihilism can find license to remain where they are: disconnected, cynical, and culpable for the misery that is descending upon us.
